The Radio Department is
responsible for the operation and maintenance of most electronic equipment
aboard the SS Lane Victory, including the original RCA RM-4U radio‑telegraph
installation in the Radio Room, the other radio equipment in the Radio Room, the
ham equipment in the ham shack, the ship's marine radios in the wheelhouse and
many other electronic elements, like the ship's PA systems and the ship's
telephones

Job Descriptions

Working in the ship's Radio Room and the
Ham Shack, interacting with visitors |
 |
Maintaining antennas, radios, PA
systems, loud speakers, wiring, telephones |
 |
Operating the amateur radios in the ham
shack and Radio Room, both during ship's activities (like Special
Events) or independently |
 |
Operating the Radio Room commercial
radios, if you hold an appropriate commercial Radio Operator's license. |
 |
Acting as the ship's official Radio
Operator during cruises, if you hold an FCC GMDSS Operator's license. |

Opportunities
 |
Volunteering one or more days a week, 4
to 6 hours per day |
 |
Usual work days are Wednesday or
Saturday |
 |
200 hours of volunteer time to become a
"Working Crew" member |
 |
"Working Crew" members may operate the
ham radios on their own (per their license) |
 |
Learning the needed information to
obtain/upgrade FCC ham or commercial Radio Operator's licenses |

As a volunteer in the

Make contacts all over the world through
the ham radios |

Learn about modern marine
communications, WWII era radios and telephone wiring and maintenance |

Learn about the Merchant Marine and the
Naval Armed Guard in time of war |
